D.J. MacHale Visit Coming Soon!

Time flies, and author D.J. MacHale’s visit to Mira Costa on April 19 is just around the corner now. If you have been thinking about reading one of his books before his visit, now is the time! Please consider buying one of his books and getting it signed that day, or borrowing one from the library. You can order one of his books in advance through {pages}, Manhattan Beach’s local independent book seller, and support a local vendor. The library will also receive a portion of the profits from your order. Download and print this flyer to order, or come by the library for a copy, and turn your order into the library. You will also be able to buy books on the day of the visit, but pre-ordering is a great idea! His new book, The Black, the second book in his Morpheus Road trilogy is being published the day of his visit.  To learn about The Light, the first book in the trilogy, watch this booktalk:

It’s also time to come by the library if you would like to attend one of his talks during Periods 2, 3, or 4 on April 19. Don’t miss this great opportunity; see Mrs. Lofton in the library to sign up today!

California Young Reader Medal Voting

It’s time to vote for the California Young Reader Medal nominees for 2011. If you are a Mira Costa student and you have read all three books in the Young Adult category, you can vote. Please be sure to vote by 3 P.M. on March 31. Here is the ballot. Please understand that you can vote only if you have read all three books.

And, did you know that the 2011-2012 CYRM nominees have been announced? The nominees in the Young Adult category include:

  • Graceling by Kristin Cashore
  • Beastly by Alex Flinn
  • If I Stay by Gayle Forman

This is the first year that I have read all three before they were nominated. I loved them all, and am sure you will, too. Voting for these titles will take place in March 2012. Start reading and enjoy. 🙂

It’s Teen Tech Week, a national celebration sponsored by YALSA, the Young Adult division of the American Library Association. It’s a chance for teens to learn more about technology and what it can offer them both for fun and productivity. To celebrate, the Mira Costa Library is hosting several activities:

  • A Teen Tech Week Scavenger Hunt. Come by the library to get a contest form and answer five easy questions. Or, you can even download it here. But, if you come to the library, we’ll be happy to help you with any clues you need to answer all the questions. All participants with correct answers will be entered in a prize drawing for an iTunes certificate.
  • Come to the library  during lunch on Tuesday to learn about Wordle.net, a fun and easy word cloud creation tool. Please eat lunch quickly and come straight to the library at 12:30 for the session. There will be a raffle drawing for all participants.
  • Come to the library  during lunch on Friday to learn about Flickr.com, a fun and easy word cloud creation tool. Please eat lunch quickly and come straight to the library at 12:30 for the session. There will be a raffle drawing for all participants.

For more Teen Tech Week fun, visit YALSA’s Teen Tech Week site, and participate in the contest there, where you could win an Amazon gift certificate or Nook e-reader. Don’t wait to check this link. The first portion of the contest begins and ends on Monday, March 7. The second portion runs from Tuesday, March 8 through Friday, March 11.
