D.J. MacHale Author Visit

The Mira Costa High School Library is pleased to announce that D.J. MacHale, a local, acclaimed author is visiting our school on April 19, 2011, and will be speaking about his craft at several sessions in the library. Mr. MacHale’s books include the Pendragon series and his new Morpheus Road trilogy. The second installment of Morpheus Road trilogy is being released on April 19, the day of Mr. MacHale’s Mira Costa visit. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to hear an author describe his craft in a small group session. Students will have the opportunity to sign up to attend one of the sessions on a lottery basis, and all students who have read one or more of his books before the visit will be guaranteed a spot in one of the sessions.

The library has copies of his books to borrow, but we encourage you to also purchase one or more of his books to enjoy and keep. All students who purchase books will have the opportunity to meet Mr. MacHale and have their books signed during his visit. We have arranged with {pages} bookstore, a local Manhattan Beach independent book vendor, to order his titles, and a portion of your purchases will also benefit our library. Please check and complete the attached flyer to order books as soon as possible so that you will have ample time to read before Mr. MacHale’s visit.

Thanks for your interest and support! For more information, contact Jane Lofton, Teacher Librarian.

  1. What a great author and a great speaker. Lots of interesting and important advice about the craft of writing. Really worth stopping in on one of the sessions! Thanks DJ for making the time in your busy schedule and Thanks Jane for bringing this opportunity to Costa!

  6. I have never read any of his books before. What makes these books so thrilling to read and why should i read them?

  7. How cool to have an author come and visit our own library. I’d love to hear about how he became an author. Thank you Ms. Lofton for setting this up!

  10. This seems like an interesting oppurtunity but i feel we shouldnt waste an hour of class learning about qr codes and exploring a Blog. I feel this time could have been much better used studying or doing something productive. it’s still an interesting oppurtunity but i would have been much more inclined to go if this wasn’t part of a graded assignment that forces us to comment on a blog and download apps to our phones.

  11. This seems like an interesting opportunity but i feel the time spent on this could have been much better used studying or doing someting productive. We shouldnt be spending an hour class time searching through blogs and using qr codes to learn about an author who is visiting mira costa. i would have much rathered prefered an announcement during second period than this. It still seems like an interesting oppurtunity but i would’ve been more inclined to go if it wasn’t part of a graded assignment where we are told to post on blogs and download apps to our phones. Dj is a great author though.

    • Dear student12345,

Thanks for expressing your opinion about the Teen Tech Week activity. There is never a class assignment or activity that will appeal to everyone, just as there is never a book that everyone will enjoy. We all have different interests. Nevertheless, I believe strongly that learning about technology and how blogs work is a productive activity. I am confident that you will be using blogs, QR codes, and other tools covered in the activity more and more as sources and tools for information, research, and communication. I wanted you to all get some experience with them now.

      with best wishes,
      Mrs. Lofton

  12. That is so awesome! I love the Pendragon series, I litterally just finished it last week! I can’t wait, I’d really like to meet him! Will we be able to interact with him personally? Ask him questions, and talk about his writing?
It’s so awesome to get the oppertunity to meet a good author, I hope this happens more often!
